Have you ever taken a moment out of your busy day to “listen” to what your best friend is trying to say? That’s exactly what happened when I finally heard what Rosie, my Cocker Spaniel, was trying to tell me about her bed.
Rosie went to work with me every day. At the office and at home, Rosie would enthusiastically try to make her bed comfortable, pawing and digging until she tore and shredded every bed I bought. We were both frustrated!
I would cover the unsightly holes and tears by putting a blanket over the bed. Rosie would “fluff” the blanket, moving it right out of her bed onto the floor before proceeding to lay down on the fluffed-up blanket.
When I arrived at the office one day, I said to Rosie, “this is YOUR day!” I spent that day designing and making a special bed for Rosie. I designed a unique bed that had a generous blanket securely attached to the top of a soft fluffy pillow. The pillow was designed to tuck inside a soft and cuddly bolster, surrounding Rosie to create a secure environment. Aside from creating the ideal pet bed, two other important factors came into play during the design phase: keeping pet beds out of landfills and ensuring the entire bed could be easily washed and dried at home.
Rosie walked into her new bed, pawed at the attached blanket for a moment then laid down. I had finally heard Rosie! She wanted a bed she could paw and arrange to satisfy her instinctive bedding behavior. Rosie was instantly satisfied and never destroyed another bed again. I called the bed “Zen Den,” and Rosie was finally able to make a “bed” in the Zen Den to get the comfort she wanted and needed.
As our testing progressed, we heard from numerous pet owners that the Zen Den provided comfort and a sense of security to their pets, too. We even heard this from owners whose dogs shredded “indestructible” beds. Now, their dogs got in their new Zen Dens and laid down without destroying the bed. Those dogs were also wanting a Zen Den, their owners just hadn’t heard them, like I hadn’t heard Rosie.
